With origins tracing back to the Iberians, L'Ampolla has seen many civilizations. Its name comes from the bottle-like shape of an ancient mouth of the Ebro River. After several attempts, it became an independent municipality in 1990, separating from El Perelló.

L'Ampolla is well connected by the AP-7 (exit 39A) and the N-340 roads. It also has a train station on the R16 line (Barcelona - Tortosa). The nearest airports are Reus (70 km), Barcelona (150 km), and Valencia (190 km).
