Samsun is a city in the Central Karadeniz region of Turkey. It is the largest city on the Turkish Black Sea coast. Samsun, historically known as Sampsounta (Greek: Σαμψούντα), is a city on the north coast of Turkey with a population of around 1.4 million people. It is the provincial capital of Samsun Province and a major Black Sea port. The growing city has two universities, several hospitals, shopping malls, much light manufacturing industry, sports facilities, and an opera.
A formerly Greek settlement, the city was where Mustafa Kemal Atatürk began the Turkish War of Independence in 1919.
