Taiyuan (太原, Tàiyuán) is the capital of Shanxi Province and a common stopover between Wu Tai Shan and Pingyao. Taiyuan (Chinese: 太原, pinyin: Tàiyuán, Mandarin, also known as Bīng 并, Jìnyáng 晋阳) is the capital and largest city of Shanxi Province, People's Republic of China. It is one of the main manufacturing bases in China. Throughout its long history, Taiyuan was the capital or provisional capital of many dynasties in China, hence the name Lóngchéng (龙城, Dragon City).As of the 2020 census, its total population was 5,304,161 inhabitants and 4,529,141 lived in the 6 urban districts. However, 5,433,659 lived in the built-up (or metro) area made of these 6 districts plus the Yuci district in Jinzhong City, largely conurbated.Taiyuan is located roughly in the center of Shanxi, with the Fen River flowing through the central city. Taiyuan is also a major city, appearing among the top 500 cities in the world by scientific research outputs, as tracked by the Nature Index, and home to the Taiyuan University of Technology, the key university in China, and other public universities including Shanxi University, Taiyuan University of Science and Technology and the North University of China.
