Vestmannaeyjar

Welcome to Vestmannaeyjar!

Vestmannaeyjar (Westman Islands) is a town on the island of Heimaey. Heimaey is the largest of 15-18 islands in the Westman Islands archipelago, just off the south-west coast of Iceland's mainland. Vestmannaeyjar has a population of around 4,200. Many visitors are attracted to the island in order to discover the effects of the 1973 volcanic eruption. An interactive exposition takes visitors to the "Pompeii of the North".

Vestmannaeyjar (sometimes anglicized as Westman Islands) is a municipality and archipelago off the south coast of Iceland. The largest island, Heimaey, has a population of 4,332, most of whom live in the archipelago's main town, Vestmannaeyjabær. The other islands are uninhabited, although six have single hunting cabins. Vestmannaeyjar came to international attention in 1973 with the eruption of the Eldfell volcano, which destroyed many buildings and forced a month-long evacuation of the entire population to mainland Iceland. Approximately one-fifth of the town was destroyed before the lava flow was halted by the application of 6.8 billion liters of cold seawater.
