Voronezh is a city in Voronezh Oblast, about 250 km from the Ukraine border, in the heart of Chernozemye. It is located on the Voronezh river and is an important railway junction with lines to Moscow, Rostov-on-the-Don, and Kyiv. Due to its relatively large population (about 1,050,000 in 2020), it is often considered the capital of Chernozemye.

Voronezh (Russian: Воронеж) is a city and the administrative center of Voronezh Oblast in Central Russia straddling the Voronezh River and located 12 kilometers (7.5 mi) from where it flows into the Don River. The city sits on the Southeastern Railway, which connects western Russia with the Urals and Siberia, the Caucasus and Ukraine, and the M4 highway (Moscow-Voronezh-Rostov-on-Don-Novorossiysk). Its population in 2020 was estimated to be 1,058,261 inhabitants, up from 889,680 recorded in the 2010 Census, it is the thirteenth most populous city in the country.
